Mooloolaba Beach

Mooloolaba Beach was one of the best beaches I’ve been to near Brisbane.

As soon as I stepped onto the sand I could hear the crashing of the waves, the voices of people and the warm sun on my back. I had a good feeling that this would be an amazing beach.

The waves at Mooloolaba were truly awesome and scary at the same time. I was faced with waves that towered over me (a few metres high) right before they came crashing down on me. The waves on the day I went were extremely powerful, I seen several adults and I myself go rolling with the surf as it came in. While I would like to say I eventually overcame the fear of these large waves, I can’t because every gigantic wave gave me a different thrill. This beach is definitely one for the thrill seekers and risk takers. Personally however, I like waves which I can catch by just swimming and I was able to do that here which is why I’ve given it 5/5

A view of the Surf

Crowds at a beach is a large deciding factor on whether I’ll return back or not. It’s hard to swim in a beach or pool when you’re surrounded by people and it isn’t safe when a wave can throw people like bowling pins. At Mooloolaba there was a fair crowd of beach goers but we still got a spot on the sand and a few meters around us in the water. The lifeguards had a wide space between the flags which helped things. While I came at the end of beach season there was still a lot of people and it would probably be worse during peak. I’ve rated this 3/5 because it wasn’t canned sardines crowded (1) but it also wasn’t peaceful by any means.

Mooloolaba as an area is a nice retreat full of resorts and hotels. You’ll find many tourists and backpackers around. It’s a calm and relaxing atmosphere and for a few days it certainly would be the place to relax and unwind. After hitting the beach we got hydrated with a bit of sugar at Boost (to combat the salt of course) and got a bite at Ninth Street Burgers.

I also want to comment on the safety of swimming at the beach, while the waves were rough you definitely won’t be alone adrift in the ocean. There were many lifeguards around, patrolling and being active about getting swimmers in the right area between the flags!

Overall an all around great experience which could be made better by a dampened swell.
